With Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai inching closer towards achieving success in turning his dream of getting the IIT project at Sanguem into reality, the farmers once again increased their momento for opposition to the project.
The farmers who are closely watched by government and not being permitted to conduct meetings, met at an informal meet held at a short notice at Cotarli Sanguem to oppose the project and discuss on the next course of action.
The meet held at about 6.30 pm was attended by around 150 farmers and was addressed by Constancio Mascarenhas, Carlota Fernandes, Sanjay Mapari and Joseph Fernandes.
Constancio Mascarenhas who is spearheading the movement against IIT at Sanguem brought to fore of the damage that would be caused to the flora and fauna in the area once the project stands commissioned.
Mascarenhas pointed out the already existing IIT at Birla and the other one at Farmagudi. There is absolutely no need for setting up the IIT on the pristine farm land at Sanguem.
He also pointed out vast land adjacent to the proposed IIT project which he alleged to be owned by some influential family. In the event of the government getting final nod for the project, this particular land which admeasures around 76,000 sq mtrs would be in high demand and the politicians who are behind setting up IIT at Sanguem will stand to benefit.
Another farmer Sanjay Mapari sought to know from the authorities as to where the Government would divert all the flora and fauna in Cotarli village once the project stands commissioned and concrete structures begins coming up.
Another farmer Joseph Fernandes spoke on the false assurance given by Phaldessai on job front while Carlota Fernandes spoke on the criteria that needs to be followed to get admission to IIT.
