Fatal accident on Virdi bridge, truck driver arrested

A motorcyclist lost his life after being knocked down by a truck on Virdi bridge on Wednesday.

Venkatesh Umakant Jalmi, who was riding a Splendor motorcycle with registration number GA04-T-1691, was struck by a tipper truck (GA09-U-1548) driven by Abdul Rehman Sunakat.

According to the police, it was determined that Sunakat, aged 34, and residing at H.No-1101, Gandhinagar-Sanvordem was under the influence of alcohol while driving towards Virdi from the Amona direction. He collided with Jalmi's motorcycle on the bridge, causing the motorcyclist grievous injuries. Jalmi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the CHC Sanquelim.

Sunakat fled the scene without providing any medical assistance to the victim. In response, Bicholim Police Station has registered a case under Crime No. 74/2024, invoking sections 105, 281 BNS & Sec 185, 134 (a)(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act. The truck involved in the accident has been seized. Sunakat was arrested and underwent a medical examination, which confirmed his blood alcohol content was above the permissible limit.
