Even as the Aam Admi Party has unveiled party candidates for the Benaulim and Colva Zilla Panchayats and the Congress expected to follow suit in the coming days, two former South Goa Zilla Panchayat Chairpersons “ Nelly Rodrigues and Maria Rebello, appears all set to throw their hat in the election ring.
Both Nelly and Maria had played long innings as members of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat before they made it to the post of Chairperson. With the ZP polls now just less than a month away, both Nelly and Maria seemed to have decided to contest the upcoming polls from the Colva and Benaulim ZP constituencies.
The duo have already kicked up their campaign for the two seats, where the Aam Asdmi Party is making a determine bid to get its candidates elected for the South Goa seat. The Congress too is gearing up to face the Aam Admi Party challenge and regain the two seats.
As things stand today, Nelly seemed to have decided to contest the coming polls as an Independent candidate. A four-time ZP member from the Colva constituency, Nelly informed that she has finally decided to throw her hat in the election ring as an Independent. “Political parties had approached me to contest the election on their party banner. But, my supporters have told me to contest as an independent”, she said.
On the other hand, former three-time ZIlla Panchayat member representing Benaulim, Maria Rebello is no stranger to Benaulim politics. She is believed to have staked claim for the Congress ticket. She is a waiting for the Congress to unveil party candidate for Benaulim to chalk out her course of action.
In fact, Maria made no bones of the fact that she would contest the coming polls as an independent if the Congress does not nominate her for the Benaulim seat.
