The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) issued an impromptu order to not burn Narkasur effigies in the water soon after a social media post went viral about one such effigy in Mandovi River, on Saturday.
The order by the Member Secretary of the GCZMA directed the concerned local group to not burn the effigy in water, which if done, would attract offence under the Environmental Act.
“This authority has learnt from reliable sources that a Narkasur effigy has been erected in the Mandovi River at Ekoshi. In view of this, it is requested that the said Narkasur effigy be brought on land and it should not be allowed to burn in the River or within the CRZ area. If anyone does not adhere to it, necessary action shall be initiated against the violators for causing environmental damages,” reads the order.
The Narkasur effigy sitting on a crocodile replica, in the River, created a sensation on social media with one X user claiming this is an annual thing. “What’s new? Every year they make it in the river only,” a social media user who goes by the name ‘Master Chef’ posted.
Huge effigies of Narkasurs of the Asura King Narakasura are burnt across the State with its 'Vadh’ symbolizing the defeat of Narakasura by Lord Krishna. The effigies, filled with crackers, were burnt in the early hours of the morning, which is followed by Diwali celebrations.
