Goa-Belagavi route via Chorla opened for heavy vehicles at night

PANAJI

The Goa to Belagavi route via the Chorla Ghat has been opened for heavy commercial vehicles past sundown between 8 pm and 6 am nearly four months after it had been closed for these heavy vehicles.

The order was issued by the North Goa District Magistrate (Collector) permitting the entry and exit of heavy commercial vehicles between 8 pm and 6 am for vehicles proceeding to Belagavi from Kerim.

The District Magistrate, however has mandated that signboards be put up and has notified that PWD put up information and also install booths for police personnel at strategic locations.

Earlier in July this year, the Collector had ordered a ban on entry and exit of heavy traffic on the road via the Chorla Ghat between Goa and Belagavi, due to the poor condition of the road as well as the expected inclement weather during the monsoon.

The closure of the road had disrupted supply chains and vehicles supplying essentials had to take the Anmod Ghat route.

Goa depends heavily on Belagavi for supply of daily essentials like vegetables, fruits, milk and also meat and poultry.
