Against the backdrop of an increasing number of road accidents and fatalities, the consumer and civic forum GOACAN has decided to launch a campaign to remember the road traffic victims and insist on an efficient public transport system in Goa to address the issue.
The forum coordinator Roland Martins said that the campaign will begin on November 19, the eve of IFFI's inaugural and also the “World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims" and conclude on November 26, the “World Sustainable Transport Day.”
“The campaign will highlight the need for justice for road traffic victims by all government agencies implementing the recommendations of the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee and putting in place the required institutional mechanisms,” Martins said.
Some of the key points will be the setting up of an exclusive website to be hosted by the lead agency and supported by the Directorate of Transport as well as the traffic police to provide updates on court cases filed due to drunken driving, rash and negligent driving, and hit-and-run cases which have resulted in grievous injuries and deaths.
It also includes demand for uploading minutes and Action Taken Reports (ATR) of the District Road Safety Committees on the websites of the respective district collectorates and the Public Works Department; minutes and ATR of the State Road Safety Council to be uploaded on the website of the Directorate of Transport; and to hold regular site inspections and prepare reports on causes and analysis of these accidents.
“GOACAN will also reach out to the Panchayat and Municipal Road Safety and Traffic Management Committees so as to remember the Road Traffic Victims and to also initiate a discussion and prepare an action plan for an efficient public transport system in the villages and towns so as to reduce road accidents and fatalities,” Martins said.
