Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday assured the Goa Legislative Assembly that the government would procure new motorcycles for the police force and further strengthen patrolling across the State in response to growing public concern over thefts and robberies.
The Chief Minister was responding to Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, who raised the issue in the House, pointing to a rise in incidents such as thefts, robberies, chain snatching, dacoities and the breaking open of donation boxes in temples in various parts of Goa.
Lobo said there was widespread anxiety among citizens due to the increasing crime rate.
“The people are feeling unsafe in their own houses,” he told the House, stressing the urgent need to restore public confidence in the Goa Police.
Seeking details on the steps the government proposed to take, Lobo highlighted the shortage of vehicles with the police and emphasised the importance of providing motorcycles to enable effective and regular patrolling, particularly in residential and vulnerable areas.
Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Sawant said the government was aware of the situation and assured that new motorcycles would be sanctioned for the police to improve mobility. He also said that police patrolling would be intensified across the state to deter criminal activity and ensure better security for citizens.
