Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE ) on Thursday threatened to take the law in their hands if Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar did not suspend licences of fishing boats violating fishing ban,
GRE President Agnelo Rodrigues, GRE President slammed the Fisheries Director Dr Sharmila Monteiro for failure to implement the monsoon fishing order which has commenced from Wednesday, June 1 and will end on July 31 , according to a GRE press release.
"GRE from inception since 1978 was demanding a monsoon ban to allow for proper spawning of marine species due to the decline of fishing resources, but the fisheries department today has completely failed us, as it has repeatedly failed to implement and act on its own order be it LED light fishing, Malpe bull twalling and now even the monsoon ban,"said Rodrigues.
Rodrigues also demanded the Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar appoint a full-time fisheries director.
"A day will come when the fishermen will be displaced and the fisheries department will become a ghost department. We at GRE demand that the fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar immediately intervene and suspend all the licenses of those who have violated the ban failing which the GRE members across Goa will be forced to take law into their hands," said Rodrigues.
