GSWMC ropes in IIT Hyderabad to deploy AI for waste mgmt

PANAJI

In a bid to make waste management more efficient and economically sustainable, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being sought to be deployed in Goa and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad has been roped in for the purpose.

According to top official at the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) an MoU was recently signed with IIT Hyderabad and an NGO from that city United Way, to deploy AI and enhance capacity and efficiency.

In the first phase, the proposal will be put in action at the Saligao and Cacora-Curchorem plants where AI cameras near the sorting conveyor belt will analyse the kind of waste that comes and whether it has been accurately sorted into wet and dry waste.

Another goal is to figure out the level of wastage of 'useful' waste  at the sorting level, the official said, adding that the MoU also touches on increasing the output of workers at the plant based on the information collected by the AI cameras.

The project is being funded by the Centre of Excellence at IIT-Kanpur set up as part of the Centre-funded "Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India" programme.

The MoU will help the Corporation improve economic value and in the next phase, AI will be introduced in the door-to-door garbage collection operation.
