MARGAO
Goa Waste Management Corporation GWMC’s second vehicle laden with Sonsodo waste headed to the Cacora waste treatment plant on Saturday, even as local residents of Curchorem has questioned the transportation of Sonsodo waste to their locality.
Margao Municipal officials pointed out that the GWMC vehicle carried around 10 tons of wet waste from Sonsodo to Cacora on Saturday. The official, however said that the MMC has transported close to 17-18 tons of wet waste to the Saligao waste treatment plant on Saturday.
The High Court has mandated the GWMC to transport 20 tons of Sonsodo wet waste to the Cacora plant for treatment on a daily basis from September 1. Sources said the GWMC could manage to arrange a lone garbage compactor for the moment as a result of which the Corporation was able to transport only 10 metric tons of wet waste to the Cacora plant.
The MMC official, however, hastened to add that the ongoing system of disposing of the wet waste from Sonsodo is not affected in any way after the GWMC could arrange only one vehicle during the last two days.
“The MMC has put in place a system by roping in contractors via the e-tender to transport Sonsodo wet waste to the Saligao waste treatment plant on payment of tonnage basis. Till the GWMC puts a system in order to transport the 20 tons of waste from Sonsodo to Cacora, the MMC would continue to use its existing system and the contractor to transport the Sonsodo waste to the Saligao waste treatment plant”, the MMC official further informed.
