HC hears arguments in MGP, Congress disqualification pleas

The Bombay High Court at Goa has begun hearing arguments in the appeal filed by the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party challenging the Speaker’s decision to uphold the ‘merger’ of two MLAs of the MGP with the BJP back in 2019.
The MGP petition is being heard along with the petition filed by the Congress that similarly challenges the Speaker's decision not to disqualify the ten legislators who switched sides to the BJP.
After hearing the matter for sometime, the High Court has agreed to continue with the hearing on January 5.
The petition, which was filed no sooner the Speaker gave his ruling in April this year, was initially placed before a bench of the Bombay High Court in Mumbai after one of the judges of the Goa bench recused from hearing the case. However, since the Goa bench has been reconstituted the matter has now been heard for the first time.
