The newspapers have been carpet-bombing us with hagiographic images and utterances of the PM on December 19. It almost seemed as if God himself had descended from the heavens. The sojourn was ostensibly to inaugurate various civil projects but the PM missed no opportunity to slyly denigrate Nehru by mentioning that Liberation Day could have arrived sooner had Sardar Patel lived a bit longer and that the delay resulted in more Goan freedom fighters losing their lives. He drags out the past time and again (Aurangzeb vs Shivaji binary in Kashi recently) to malign previous governments, every public function becomes an election rally. It does not behove a person occupying arguably the highest post in the land to vilify others at every given opportunity. A leader who drags you into history all the while is incapable of giving you a future and has nothing to offer you in the present, let us choose wisely next time.
