Helmet, safety harness must for pillion kids from Feb 2023

Safety aids, including helmets and safety harnesses, for children up to the age of four riding pillion on two-wheelers will be compulsory but will be implemented from February next year, a new notification issued by the Central government has said.

The related rules which were notified on Tuesday will be enforced exactly a year from now.

Apart from safety head-gear (helmet), a child riding pillion will also have to be fitted with an adjustable safety harness.

Violation of the rules will entail a three-month suspension of the rider’s licence and a fine of Rs 1,000.

Also, the rules impose a maximum speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour if there are children riding pillion. 

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, “The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, vide notification dated February 15, 2022, has amended Rule 138 of CMVR, 1989 and has prescribed norms related to safety measures for children below four years of age, riding or being carried on a motorcycle.”
