Doctors at the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital here have saved the life of a 10-day-old infant from Goa by performing a rare cardiac surgery.
Divulging details, Dr Praveen Tambrallimath of the KLES Hospital said that a Goan woman had delivered twin female babies at Goa Medical College, recently. However, one among the twins had breathing difficulty and was turning blue. The baby was then put on ventilators and brought to KLES Hospital at Belagavi in an ambulance.
“An examination revealed the baby suffered from complex congenital heart disease medically termed as Transposition of Great Arteries (TGA), wherein arteries of the heart are misplaced,” Dr Tambrallimath said.
Doctors said due to the TGA, two main arteries carrying blood out of the heart i.e. the main pulmonary artery and the aorta were transposed (altered). After investigations, the birth defect in the heart was diagnosed needing supra major surgery and the parents consented for an immediate surgery.
“Carrying a complex surgery on a 2-kg infant with a tender heart weighing just about 50 grams is challenging and requires extraordinary surgical skills and patience,” Dr Tambrallimath said.
After arterial switch operation connecting great arteries to the correct pumping chambers was performed correcting anomalies in the heart surgically corrected, the baby was stabilised for 15 days in post-surgical Cardiac ICU. “If untreated, over 50 per cent of infants with transposition die in the first month of life,” Medical Director and CEO Dr M V Jali said. The baby was operated under the Goan healthcare scheme, Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana (DDSSY), he added.
KLES Chairman Dr Prabhakar Kore has congratulated the surgical team comprising Dr Nikunj Vyas, Dr Anand Vagrali, Dr Sharangouda Patil and Dr Nidhi Manvi Goel. The infant has been discharged and is back home in Goa. The parents of the infant have expressed deep joy and gratitude to the KLES team of doctors for saving the life of their child and for the personal care extended by the hospital team.
