People residing near the Curchorem Market at Morailem have complained of stench in the locality due to dumping of wet and dry garbage in the vicinity.
They claimed that though the Waste Treatment Plant has been commissioned at Cacora-Curchorem, the contractor associated with the collection of garbage from door-to-door visits has been dumping the collected garbage at Morailem for further processing, before transporting it to the Garbage Treatment Plant.
The aggrieved residents feared that the garbage dumped in the area at regular intervals poses a severe health hazard to those who reside in the adjoining buildings.
While many residents complained that their homes have been infested with flies if they keep their windows open, some elders claimed that people have stopped visiting them on account of the stench in the area.
When contacted, Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) Ward Councillor Clementina Fernandes informed that she had raised this issue at the recent monthly meeting.
“I had apprised the CCMC Chairperson Prasanna Bhende of the grave situation in the area and the problems confronting locals residing in the area. I have asked the council to direct the contractor to shift the dumping point elsewhere and relieve the locals from the trauma they are presently facing,” said Fernandes.
