Environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar alleges that the Fukeri dam project by the Maharashtra government will affect the river water in Goa which in turn will pose a threat to the water source of the Chandel treatment plant.
The Maharashtra government has already started work on a dam at a cost of Rs 65.30 crore at Fukeri.
"This dam will pose a threat to the Kalne river in Pernem taluka and also affect the water supply for the Chandel water treatment plant", said Environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar while raising objection to the construction of the dam.
Kerkar said that if Kalne river water level goes down due to the dam, the water in Goa at the treatment plant at Chandel will go down.
This will badly affect the Goa government's plans to expand the Chandel treatment plant, said Kerkar.
Goa government wants to expand the plant to cater to additional water requirements at Mopa airport and other business establishments in surrounding areas, Kerkar pointed out.
Kerkar has urged the Goa government to talk to the Maharashtra government in this regard on an urgent basis.
As per the Maharashtra government, the State government is building a dam to supply irrigation water to horticulturalists from surrounding areas.
