Mahila Congress workers descended in the heart of Navelim village on Friday to protest over the onion prices and to sell onions at a subsidized rate as a mark of protest over the BJP’s government’s failure to bring down the rates.
Led by State Mahila Congress President, Pratima Coutinho, the mahilas squatted on an open space and sold onions in kilograms. There was a mad rush from citizens to lay their hands on onions being sold by the Mahila Congress as a kilogram of onion was sold at a rate of Rs 25. Each citizen was entitled for only two kgs of onions.
Shouting slogans against the government for its failure to bring down the onion prices, Pratima said the common man has been hit the most by the skyrocketing prices of onion.
“We are selling onions at a rate of Rs 25 per kg to open the eyes of the government and expose the ruling party for its indifference to the sufferings of the common man”, Pratima said, adding that the protest will continue across the state.
The Mahila Congress workers had brought around 120 kg of onion for sale at Navelim and the entire stock was sold within minutes like hot cakes.
