Heavy flooding in Mala could be a thing of the past with the introduction of a flood water pumping station that is capable of pulling the water out from flooded areas. The claim was made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant after inaugurating the station “ set up by the Water Resources Department - on Wednesday.
“People residing in the Mala area now don’t have to worry about floods,” he said after inaugurating the pumping station under the initiative of Smart City Mission at Mala.
He stated that the pumping system costs around Rs 15.90 cr and it has drainage connectivity which will improve the drainage in the surrounding area by reconnecting the drains and getting all stormwater into the Mala Lake from the areas of Altinho Hill and other upper areas of the catchment.
“It will increase the storage capacity and control the entry of water from the creek into the Mala area. The two electrically operated Activator gates are also installed, which will shut during the high tide and open during the low tide. This is the second project in the state after the Sanquelim pumping station,” the CM added.
With the State facing an acute water crisis and this year being the worst hit, Sawant urged the need to increase storage capacity while suggesting that there is a need to construct bandhara in new places.
