Convicted serial killer Mahanand Naik has dutifully returned to Colvale Central Jail after completing his authorized 21-day furlough granted by the Prisons Department last month.
While it is believed he abided by all the terms and conditions imposed during his release period, his request application’s prompt approval and premature release did spark controversy despite which the authorities remained a mute spectator.
Serious questions were raised regarding the timing and adherence to prison regulations at the time of setting him free, albeit temporarily. The convict was released around 6 am on June 15 instead of the evening hours.
Having legally separated from his wife, who already shifted to Mumbai with their minor daughter, Naik spent his furlough in the institution of St Xavier Academy for the Handicapped at Old Goa. As per details provided by the police, he had to report to the Old Goa police station every alternate day till the furlough’s completion.
He was accompanied by three roommates in the institution where he carried out the carpentry work besides his daily routine.
Naik faced serious accusations of murdering up to 15 young women from 1994 to 2009 and raping another young girl. The only surviving victim, who played a crucial role in his conviction, had raised safety concerns and sought police protection for herself and her family until Naik was back in prison.
Interestingly, the accused maintained a relatively peaceful conduct all through his time behind bars. Working as an electrician, he refrained from engaging in disruptive behaviour or getting involved with any factions and gangs prevailing in the jail.
