The Panaji police arrested Mohammad Sadiq Shaikh for allegedly defrauding a woman of Rs 5.5 lakh on pretext of selling a housing board property and government job.
The accused, 43, from Bhatlem was arrested following a complaint by Nassrin Banu, a 43-year-old housewife from Pilar accusing Shaikh of impersonating an official of the Goa Housing Board in Porvorim.
According to her statement, he allegedly convinced her to transfer Rs. 3.3 lakh under the pretext of selling her a plot in Porvorim. He gave her a fake receipt, allotment letter and plot plan bearing survey numbers 84, 85, 86, 88, and 89.
She further alleged that Shaikh promised her a clerk job in the Directorate of Accounts for which she allegedly paid an additional Rs 2.2 lakh. He then issued a forged appointment letter from the Office of Industries, Trade and Commerce.
The police have booked an offense under Sections 419 (impersonation), 468 (forgery), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, since the offenses occured before the enforcement of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
