Vasco Police arrested a man from Bethora-Ponda in possession of illegal substances suspected to be ganja and valued at Rs 5 lakh.
A narcotics raid led by PSI Carey Fernandes was conducted near the Hindu Crematorium at Kharewaddo-Vasco on Friday evening between 3.55 pm and 7.30 pm.
The accused, identified as Sadik Davangiri of Marbel, Bethora, Ponda, was found in possession of 5.24 kilograms of a dry, greenish-colored substance suspected to be Ganja. The seized contraband, estimated to be worth Rs 5 lakh, was confiscated on the spot.
Following the seizure, the accused was taken into custody and booked under Section 20(b)(ii)(B) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. He has been remanded to five days of police custody by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Vasco, to facilitate further investigation into the case.
PSI Carey Fernandes, of Vasco police station is probing the case to uncover possible links to larger drug networks operating in the region under the supervision of PI Kapil Nayak and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
