The long-cherished dream of a modern bus terminus for Mapusa could soon become a reality, as the Directorate of Transport has sought formal approval from the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) to redevelop the existing municipal bus-stand under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The proposed revamp aims to transform the existing Mapusa bus terminal into a state-of-the-art, efficient, and economically vibrant transport hub for North Goa. The redevelopment is part of a broader State government initiative, with budgetary allocations already made for the upgrade of bus terminals across Goa through PPP.
According to officials, the Directorate of Transport has already appointed a Transaction Advisor to structure and implement the Mapusa terminal project. The project hinges on the integration of two key land parcels: the existing municipal bus-stand at Morod measuring 12,750 sq mt owned by the MMC, and the newly developed interstate bus terminal spread over 19,500 sq mt owned by the Department of Transport. Together, the unified land area would amount to 32,250 sq mt.
“For the proposed redevelopment to be financially and operationally viable, it is essential to integrate both land parcels into a unified project layout,” said P Abhishek, Director of Transport (IAS).
As part of the agreement, the Transport Department has proposed a revenue-sharing model with MMC, based on a pro-rata formula that reflects the land contribution of each entity.
The department has assured the municipal council that the revamped terminal will offer several long-term advantages. These include enhanced revenue generation for the council, an upgraded civic infrastructure, improved passenger amenities, commercial spaces, and integrated urban mobility solutions.
Officials also foresee the project spurring local economic growth.
“A modern terminal will attract higher footfall, boost local businesses, and uplift the commercial value of the area, thereby improving municipal tax collections,” the Director noted.
Additionally, the initiative is expected to enhance Mapusa’s urban image and liveability. A well-designed transport hub, officials say, will not only position Mapusa as a key regional transit point but also significantly improve the quality of life for residents.
