In what can be seen as a relief to the State government, the Managing Committee of the Mapusa comunidade has volunteered to renovate and restore the heritage building of the ‘Administracao das Comunidades de Bardez’ that houses the office of the Administrator of Comunidade, North Goa in Mapusa.
“We are ready to take up the renovation and restoration of the Administrator of Comunidade, North Goa building provided all the comunidades have no objection to our proposal,” said Salvador Pinto, President of Mapusa comunidade.
The President of Mapusa comunidade put up the proposal during a meeting of the Managing Committees of the comunidades held on Sunday at the Mapusa comunidade hall.
Pinto also volunteered to provide an alternative place to the staff of the Administrator of Comunidade, North for the period till the restoration work of the entire building is completed.
“We can take up the work as soon as we get the go-ahead from the government and NOC of the comunidades. We have ample of space where we can accommodate the staff of the Administrator of Comunidade, North until the restoration work is completed,” he said.
Pinto also informed that the land belongs to the Mapusa comunidade although the building was constructed by the comunidades of Bardez.
Administrator of Comunidade, North Goa, Shivprasad Naik informed that he will write to the government about the proposal put up by the Mapusa comunidade.
It was decided that after renovation of the building, the Mapsua comunidade could generate revenue by renting out excess space to private entities. There was also a proposal to convert excess space into a hall to hold meetings of comunidades.
Earlier part of the building was rented out to the BSNL and Mapusa Urban Health Centre.
“With Mapusa comunidade offering to renovate the building the government can take it easy. The Mapusa comunidade has the funds and they should be allowed to do the restoration work,” Rui Da Gama told The Goan.
The condition of the Portuguese-era Administrator of Comunidade building had deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. With cracks on the walls and chunks of cement falling off, the precarious condition of the heritage building has raised fears of its collapse.
