Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, Shubanghi Vaigankar on Saturday said the council was not differentiating between the ruling and opposition while carrying out work in the city even as the entire ruling council stood steadfast behind Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza in the assembly election.

“The civic body has not differentiated between ruling and opposition while taking up works in the city. We are together for development. We have just completed six months but have distributed grants equally to all 20 wards without creating any differences,” Vaigankar said.

“All the ruling 11 councillors of the Mapusa Municipal Council are backing MLA Joshua D’Souza in this assembly election,” she added.

The MMC chairperson along with the ruling councillors was addressing the media in the BJP district office, Mapusa.

MMC, Vice Chairperson, Chandrashekar Benkar Benkar said that the opposition was targeting the Mapsua MLA for doing no work in the last 20 years.

“As a matter of fact, Joshua D’Souza has been the Mapusa MLA for only two and half years and therefore it’s not fair to blame him for the past. In the last one year he has done more than any other MLA has done,” Benkar said.

He said former minister, Michael Lobo failed to do anything for Mapusa when he was a minister in the government and had no right to point fingers at the MLA.

He further said that former chairperson Ryan Braganza joining Sudhir Kandolkar’s campaign made no difference to the Mapusa MLA.

“We may not get one vote of Braganza, but his moving on the other side will fetch us 50 more votes,” he said.

Councilors Viraj Phadke, Swapnil Shirodkar and Sainath Raul also spoke.
