50 % of persons detected with cancer died in the past three years in Goa. The Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya told Lok Sabha in a written reply that during the three years between 2018 to 2020, a total of 4752 persons were detected with cancer and out of these almost more than 50 % (2618) died.
Goa registered 1543 cancer patients in 2018, 1591 patients in 2019 and 1618 cancer patients in 2020, the total of which is 4752. Out of these 848 died in 2018, 877 died in 2019 and 893 died in 2020. In these three years the persons detected with cancer in the country were 40,75,826 and out of these 22,54,886 had to lose their lives, says the reply.
The most cases of cancer are found in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. In these three years Uttar Pradesh registered the highest number of cancer patients (589990) and out of these 3,26,752 died. Maharashtra registered 340191 cases and 186902 died. West Bengal registered 317517 cases and out of these 186,902 passed away.
Consumption of tobacco, smoking, alcohol, altered lifestyle, air pollution and wrong diet are the main reasons for the increasing number of cancer patients in Goa and the rest of the country.
The Centre and State governments are doing their best to control the rising number of cancer cases. The State governments have enhanced the infrastructure to deal with the cancer patients and heal them. This has resulted in a decrease in the number of cancer cases in some of the States, stated Mandaviya.
