A mentally unstable woman from West Bengal was allegedly gang-raped by five men about a week ago in the Northern coastal tourism hot-spot of Baga.
The incident was discovered only on Sunday after the victim was taken to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) where she reportedly informed the doctor who was treating her.
An FIR has been registered against "unknown persons" by the Calangute police but the case has now been transferred to the Women's police station in Panaji for investigation and further action.
Police sources said, the shocking incident is suspected to have occurred between February 18 and 20 and based on whatever inputs could be picked from the victim's conversations related to the incident, CCTV footage of public spaces wherever available is being gathered.
Another police source revealed that the victim was admitted to the IPHB following her erratic and violent behaviour at the Panaji bus stand. Her conversations with the IPHB doctors and other personnel have indicated that she had come to Goa along with a friend who is still to be identified and located.
The condition of the victim is still not stable and no direct statement has as yet been recorded by the police. Police sub-inspector Kiran Naik, attached to the Women's Police Station is the investigating officer handling the case.
