The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday issued an order prohibiting the sale of fish within 1 km of the municipal market in Vasco.
An order issued by MMC Chief officer Jayant Tari stated that many persons were found engaged in “storage and sale of fish in the MMC jurisdiction within 1 km of the existing Municipal Fish Market.”
“The activity of selling fish within 1 km radius of the existing municipal market is prohibited and hence illegal in terms of Section 252 of the Goa Daman and Diu Municipalities Act 1968 and in terms of Bye-Law 2 (iii) of the Storage or Sale of Flesh or Fish Bye-Laws, 1971.”
Tari said local fish vendors in the market have objected to the illegal fish sale for many years and taking note of their concerns, directed that fish sale within within 1 km radius of the existing municipal market be stopped.
“In case of failure to abide by this order, action shall be taken in terms of provisions of the Act," warned Tari.
Tari also sent a letter to President of Vasco Fish Market Caridade Pereira stating that the existing fish market has been taken up for demolition and new premises would be reconstructed within the next 1-2 years from the date of commencement of work.
The chief officer pointed out that the work could not be started on time since vendors had not vacated the existing fish market premises.
“A list of 300 fish vendors was earlier prepared and finalised in consultation with representatives of the fish vendors. It is assured that the 300 fish vendors figuring in the list only shall be temporarily relocated in the sheds built for the purpose in the nearby land called Dev Damodar Trust.”
“Once the new premises are ready for occupation, all the fish vendors shall be allotted space in the new premises,” Tari stated in his letter.
