A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) taken up in association with CSR activity from the Goa Shipyard Limted (GSL) was inaugurated in the garbage treatment plant at Sada on Saturday.
The facility was inaugurated by Urban Development Minister Milind Naik in the presence of GSL CMD Cmde B B Nagpal, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damodar Kaskar, municipal councillors and other officials of GSUDA and DMA.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Naik said while the government and civic bodies can help and take steps to tackle garbage, there has to be strong participation of public.
“While we cannot avoid garbage, we need to find a solution with public cooperation. We need to also think five steps ahead and if we need to tackle garbage of around 10 tonnes, plants have to be installed to tackle 20 tonnes per day, because by the time plants are set up the garbage will definitely reach 20 tonnes per day,” said Naik.
GSL CMD Cmde BB Nagpal said he was pleased to be a part of the facility undertaken through CSR and also assured to provide any further assistance.
MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar said MRF was a vital need as the municipality would generate 20 tonnes of wet waste and 10 tonnes of dry waste everyday.
“The MRF facility will help clear the garbage issue. We will soon have another plant to tackle wet waste and with such plants, the garbage menace will be cleared once and for all. We must have more public awareness drives so that people support us in tackling garbage menace,” said Kaskar.
