Stressing the need of establishing a ‘Beggars Home’ in the North Goa district, GOACAN has called for an action plan to tackle the menace of begging which is affecting the trading community and the consumers in Mapusa market.“Beggars, including child beggars are approaching vendors, consumers and even tourists at the Mapusa market, KTC bus-stand and taxi-stand. Police have made efforts to deal with the problem but they are confronted with issues linked to support and follow up from allied departments, agencies and institutions,” said Roland Martins, Co-ordinator of GOACAN.
The NGO has urged Deputy Collector and SDM Mapusa, Gurudas Desai to convene a joint meeting of all concerned agencies like Town Police, Traffic Police, Mapusa Municipal Council, Directorate of Social Welfare, Transport Department, Directorate of Women & Child Development among others to chalk out an action plan in the interests of the trading community and consumers and the welfare of those forced into begging.
It further pointed out that there was a requirement for a ‘Beggars Home’ in the North Goa district as well as the need to implement various other provisions of The Goa, Daman and Diu Prevention of Begging Act, 1972.
GOACAN has also written to the Secretary Urban Development, North Goa Collector & District Magistrate, Director Urban Development, Social Welfare, Tourism, Women & Child Development, SP Traffic & SP (North) Goa Police, Additional Director Transport (North), Chief Officer Mapusa Municipal Council and Assistant Director Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs.
The Goan had recently highlighted the issue of the rise in begging menace vis-Ã -vis thefts in Mapusa market.
