Nirmala Institute of Education will be celebrating the annual Goa Day, with Abolianchem Fest, focussing on the theme ‘Water, the elixir of life, culture and society’ on March 4. The event will be organised in association with Directorate of Art and Culture.
This year’s logo of Abolianchem Fest was unveiled on Friday in the presence of Dr Rita Paes, director of Nirmala Institute, Dr Delia Antao, officiating principal, faculty Alisha D’Cunha, Xemina Fonseca, Raymond Pereira and students representatives Saeesh Korgaonkar and Sonia Koppalkar.
Announcing the theme of this year’s event as ‘Water’ the theme song ‘Udok’ was also played at the press meet on Friday. Each year the theme of the event differs, highlighting the various facets of Goa “ in 2018 it was Abolim flower, in 2019 it was coconut tree and in 2020 it was soil. Abolianchem Fest has been celebrated at the institute since 2018, renaming the Goa Day celebration which was on since 2001. The fest aims at reviving Goa’s age-old, socio-cultural ethos by celebrating the local music, dance, food, sports, arts, crafts and theatre of the bygone years.
“The objective of the festival is to document, generate knowledge sharing for a sustainable living of the present and future generation,” shared Dr Delia Antao, officiating principal. Director of the Institute Dr Rita Paes spoke on the goals, aims and reputation of the institute, run by the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary which was established in 1951 in India. Nirmala Institute is celebrating its diamond jubilee this year and more than 100 women teacher trainers are learning to play the State instrument Ghumot, under the tutelage of Goan Ghumot player Carlos Gonsalves.
The event will have ‘malla’ art at display, stalls with traditional games, Goan delicacies, local plants and Goa art and crafts.
Raymond Pereira spoke on the logo, stating that in sync with this year’s theme, the water element is added as a wave, portraying the abundant resources of Goa.
