Noted singer Johnson Fernandes, from Quepem, passed away on August 7. A founder member of the internationally renowned Goan cultural troupe ‘Kepemchim Kirnnam’, Johnson mesmerised audiences over the world and around the country with his powerful voice.
Johnson has been a versatile dancer too and was Goa’s ace Mando dancer having performed at different festivals and international events over the last three decades with ‘Kepemchim Kirnnam’ and has been actively involved in keeping alive the rich cultural traditions of Goa.He was also a part of the Guiness book of world records which was created for the world longest singing marathon with Kepemchim Kirnnam at Mangalore. Johnson was also the band leader of the famous Goan band of yesteryears, ‘Citizens’ in the nineties.
He will be laid to rest today with mass at Holy cross church, Quepem at 4 pm followed by burial. For many of his fans he will be seen performing the Mando dance in the forthcoming Konkani movie ‘Osmitay’ to be released all over the world on 15th September 2023.
