Nullah desilting near Goa Shipyard launched

VASCO

A long-pending issue concerning sanitation and water stagnation in Vasco was taken up on Saturday, with MLA Krishna Salkar inaugurating the desilting and improvement of a nullah located in front of Goa Shipyard Limited and behind Norbert’s.

The work, which also includes development of a water-improving garden facility, is aimed at restoring proper flow in the drain and improving the surrounding conditions that have been a concern for residents for years.

Addressing those present, Salkar said that keeping drainage lines functional is essential to avoid flooding and unhygienic conditions, especially during the monsoon.

“Our focus is to ensure that development reaches every part of Vasco. Strengthening basic infrastructure like drainage is necessary to improve the quality of life of people,” he said.

The nullah, choked with silt and waste over time, had led to water stagnation, foul smell and mosquito breeding, with residents raising the issue repeatedly. With desilting now underway, locals said they expect relief from these problems.

Residents pointed out that during heavy rains, the blocked nullah often led to overflow, creating inconvenience and health concerns in the area. The ongoing work is expected to ease the flow of water and reduce such instances.

The project also proposes a garden facility focused on improving the water condition and surroundings, which is expected to add to the upkeep of the area once the desilting work is completed.

Officials present at the site said the work would be taken up systematically to ensure that the accumulated silt is cleared and the flow is restored effectively. Steps are also expected to be taken to maintain the nullah regularly to prevent the situation from recurring.

The initiative is part of ongoing civic works being carried out in Vasco to address infrastructure gaps, with focus on drainage, sanitation and overall upkeep of public spaces.
