The Goa branch of the Rashtriya OBC Mahasang has demanded that the State government frame rules so as to overcome the lacuna pointed out by a recent High Court ruling and ensure OBC quota for admissions to the post-graduate courses at the Goa Medical College in the current academic year itself.
The organisation's State convenor Madu Naik and other office bearers addressed the media and pointed out that the High Court judgement which quashed the 41 per cent quota for ST, SC and OBC students in PG courses at GMC was a result of the failure of the State government to follow procedures.
“The government failed to frame rules on the reservation policy," Naik said, adding that the reservation policy notified in 2007 provides two per cent for SC, 12 per cent for ST and 27 per cent for OBCs.
"At least Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and his cabinet should frame rules and approve them at the earliest so that students from Backward, SC, and ST communities get their constitutional rights," Naik said.
"At the all-India level, students from ST, SC, and OBC get a reservation, and the same should be followed in Goa immediately."
He said if the government acts immediately and frames/amends rules, students from these weaker sections will benefit and get an opportunity to pursue higher education from this 2021-22 academic year.
