Nearly a week after the State government constituted a 13-member task force to review the infrastructure work at Kala Academy, no notification has been issued to schedule its first meeting. This comes as the venue is being prepared to host events of the International Film Festival of India next month.
The committee, chaired by theatre artist Vijay Kenkre, is tasked with providing recommendations for the improvement and upgrade of the iconic structure, which has faced controversy since the renovation began over two years back.
Francis Coelho, a representative of the Kala Rakhonn Mand and a committee member, told The Goan that an official notification is yet to be issued.
“There has been no notification regarding the constitution of the committee,” he said, adding that members are ready to discuss certain key issues once a meeting is convened.
Committee member Tomazinho Cardozo echoed this adding that they have received no communication from the Chairman regarding any meeting or discussion.
Coelho further explained that the initial discussions will focus on reviewing past developments related to the Academy’s infrastructure.
“We will examine what has happened, how we reached this point and what went wrong, which led to the formation of this committee. We will then address the issues and devise plans to rectify them,” he said.
The members, most of whom comprise artists, will demand accountability from those responsible for pushing the structure to a state of despair.
Coelho also expressed optimism about the Academy’s future claiming their goal is to bring it back to international standards.
“It was once considered on par with theatres in London and New York. Our objective is to restore it to that level,” he added.
