Oppn Leader, MLAs raise issue of poor roads amid ongoing works

PANAJI

The Opposition Leader and some other MLAs on Wednesday raised the issue of the dilapidated and pot-hole ridden conditions of the National Highway and other State roads from Patradevi to Pollem, mostly due to the ongoing expansion and other works.

In a calling attention motion moved by the Opposition Leader, MGP's Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar, Goa Forward Party's Vijai Sardesai and Vinod Paliencar besides Independent legislators Rohan Khaunte and Prasad Gaonkar, the legislators drew the attention of the government that the poor condition of the roads was leading to regular traffic congestion and mishaps frequently.

"The contractors need to be held accountable for haphazard, delayed and substandard jobs which are affecting the entire stretch joining North to South Goa," they said in the motion.

Works at multiple ends are being carried out by the contractors without efficiently completing any portion, they pointed out.

The legislators also lamented that no visible diversion signs for late-night commuters were being provided and debris was being dumped in gutters leading to flooding of roads and fields during the current heavy monsoon.

The Opposition Leader and the other MLAs also raised the issue of non-completion of balance works on the Atal Setu bridge project.

Haphazard work on the roads has also affected basic amenities such as electricity and water supply besides internet connectivity, they said, adding that damage to main water pipelines was causing water shortage in constituencies.

Basic amenities should not be compromised on the pretext of infrastructural development of the State, particularly keeping in mind the Covid crisis, they said and demanded that action needs to be taken against the contractors involved.
