Over 200 people were screened at Tuem in Pernem over the weekend as part of the Health department's 'Cancer Screening Abhiyan' at which 13 benign breast lesions were detected and in another case moderate suspicion of possible thyroid cancer.
According to Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, it was the first such screening with the mobile cancer van in this year and 212 people were screened with Goa Medical College and Hospital, Goa Dental College and the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Pernem collaborating in the DHS initiative.
He said, 212 people, including 121 women, participated in the screening where 43 Pap smears and 13 mammographies were conducted.
"Thirteen benign breast lesions and one case of moderate suspicion of thyroid cancer were detected. Additionally, Goa Dental College referred seven patients for further evaluation," Rane said, adding that premalignant oral lesions were detected.
New initiatives will be launched this year to reinforce the concept of early detection being a life-saver, Rane said, adding that the initiative will be expanded to reach even more individuals and ensure world-class healthcare is accessible and affordable to Goans, he added.
