In view of rising vehicular accidents, the State police have formed a Committee for interdepartmental coordination to examine the causes of accidents and suggest measures to prevent these mishaps. Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh-headed committee will have Director General of Police Aslam Khan and Superintendent of Police Shekhar Prabhudessai as its members while SP Dharmesh Angle has been appointed as the convener.
“They shall suggest measures to be undertaken by various stakeholders and road-owning agencies to prevent and reduce road accidents leading to loss of identity and property. Implementation of Road Regulations as per IRC standards to achieve road regulations, road engineering, enforcement of traffic rules and traffic education shall be the goal of the committee,” the order states.
Monthly meetings to support the ensure of smooth implementation of the suggestions of the committee is mentioned in the order and the Chairman (IGP Singh) is given the authority to look for other experts in road safety as well as representatives from Transport, PWD, Municipalities and Panchayats.
The Committee is further directed to submit a report within 30 days. The order comes two days after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant chaired a meeting with the concerned stakeholders to finalize a public program on October 21 wherein the general public will be allowed to make representation on road safety and various aspects related to it.
The government intends to chalk out short-term and long terms plans to ensure an accident-free Goa by taking into confidence concerned departments and the suggestions by people.
