The Public Works Department (PWD) water division is set to embark on a comprehensive project to replace outdated water pipelines across several key areas of Mapusa.
The project, which is slated to commence within the next two months, will cover regions such as Angod, Ektanagar and the Housing Board, extending over a total distance of approximately 12 to 13 kms.
The PWD has prioritised the replacement work in Angod, where the road network has already been significantly disrupted due to the underground electricity cabling work.
The project involves the installation of pipelines with varying diameters, ranging from 200 mm to 100 mm, customised to align with the specifications of the existing water supply infrastructure.
The replacement of these pipelines, originally scheduled for last year, was delayed due to the unavailability of certain pipeline diameters.
However, with all necessary materials now in hand, the PWD is prepared to move forward as soon as the monsoon season concludes, likely by the end of October.
Assistant Engineer Triptesh Sirsat, who is overseeing the project, expressed confidence in the timely execution of the work.
“We have received all pipelines needed for the project. Work to lay the pipelines will begin soon after the monsoon season ends, which is as early as October end,” Sirsat stated.
The pipeline replacement is a critical component of the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, a central government initiative aimed at improving urban infrastructure.
The project in Mapusa is estimated to cost approximately Rs 7.10 crore.
Sirsat emphasised the urgency of the replacement, noting that the existing pipelines, primarily composed of asbestos, are not only outdated but also pose potential health risks.
The new pipelines, made of ductile iron (DI), are considered to be far more suitable for the transmission and distribution of potable water.
Residents of Mapusa have long voiced concerns over the inconsistent and low-pressure water supply, particularly in the affected areas.
Many have reported receiving water through the PWD pipelines at alarmingly low pressure, exacerbating the daily challenges of accessing clean water.
The pipeline replacement project is expected to address these issues by modernising the water supply network, thereby reducing leaks and inefficiencies associated with the aging infrastructure.
Once completed, the new DI pipelines are anticipated to significantly enhance water pressure and reliability, offering much-needed relief to the residents of Mapusa.
