A 21-year-old man from Sirvoi-Quepem was arrested by Quepem police on charges of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.
Sources said the incident is alleged to have taken place when the parents along with the girl had gone to the house of a relative in Sirvoi on Sunday.
The accused is reported to have got the girl to play with his mobile and later took her to his room, where he is alleged to have sexually assaulted the minor girl.
The girl reportedly informed his mother about the incident and she subsequently lodged a complaint against the youth at the Quepem police station.
Acting on the complaint, the Quepem police arrested the accused on charges of raping the minor girl under Section 376 of IPC, Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act and Section 4 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The accused was later produced before the JMFC at Quepem and was remanded to seven days in police custody.
The accused is presently at the Curchorem police station as the Quepem police station building is under construction and is functioning in temporary premises.
