Incessant rains disrupted normal life in some parts of Salcete, with reports of waterlogging and tree falls on houses and roads coming from the villages on Thursday.
At Damon in Raia village, waterlogging in and around a couple of houses due to the blockage of drains. The inmates of these houses had to wade through waist-deep water to make it to their houses.
As the situation sparked outrage on social media, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco told the media that he has been constantly following up on the matter with the office of the district collector. He informed that the collector is expected to pass an order for the cleaning of the choked drains, adding that he would put his workers on the job to clean the drains. “I was trying to get a water pump to pump out the water last night but it couldn't happen,” he added.
Meanwhile, the fire brigade was virtually on their toes on Thursday after receiving a host of rescue and emergency calls. A couple of trees came crashing down on houses and roads, but no one was injured in the incidents. Water logging was also reported on the roads at Navelim, disrupting vehicular traffic.
Miraculous escape for senior citizen
An elderly bed-ridden citizen had a miraculous escape after a tree came crashing down on a house at Borda on Thursday. The Fire brigade initially tried to rescue the bed-ridden citizen out of the house but abandoned the plan for a want of access.
Fire officer Gill D’Sa later told the media that the firemen removed the debris from the house.
