Rider killed, pillion serious in road mishap at Verna

A rider was killed while the pillion rider was seriously injured when a car and a scooter collided with each other near the Utorda Bypass in Verna on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place at about 5.55 pm on the NH66 near Uttorda Bypass Road in Seraulim, Verna, when a car was driven by Prashant Gaikwad of Raigad-Maharashtra in a "rash and negligent manner, endangering human life" while travelling from Margao toward Panaji.

Verna Police stated that near the Uttorda bypass, the car veered towards the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with the Activa scooter.

The scooter rider, Sitaram Karapurkar of Bhat Pawni, Pernem, and the pillion rider, Ravindra Kumar Singh, of Jharkhand, sustained severe injuries. Karapurkar succumbed to his injuries at South Goa District Hospital in Margao.

Verna Police later arrested Prashant Gaikwad, under Sections 125(b), 281, and 106(1) of the BNS and he was later released on bail.

Further investigation into the case is being carried out by PSI Ramchandra Naik of Verna Police Station under the supervision of PI Melson Colaco and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
