Ro-Ro ferries launch delayed by 2 months due to incomplete ramp

PANAJI

The River Navigation Department’s ambitious plan to launch two rollon-rolloff (Ro-Ro) ferryboats on Ribandar-Chorao route has been further delayed by another two months due to non-completion of the new ramp.

The RoRo ferry service was set to launch from February 1 but the same was postponed to March 20.

River navigation minister Subhash Faldesai confirmed that it will take another two months for the Ro-Ro ferries to be deployed on the route.

He said that though, the government will receive both the ferries which are being built by a Goan contractor in next 15 days; the same cannot be launched as the ramps work has been delayed.

“We will have to wait for atleast two more months,” the Minister said.

The ferry wharf is currently being readied by the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) at Ribandar.

IPSCDL managing director and CEO, Sanjit Rodrigues had told The Goan earlier that the ferry wharf at Ribandar, is nearing completion with the final, submerged slab of the ramp left to be cast.

"The jetty will be fully ready and handed over by March 7,” he had said.

Ro-Ro ferries will be a huge boon to the Chorao islanders.
