MARGAO
The gram sabha of Sao Jose de Areal village panchayat on Sunday has opposed the decision of the authorities to hand over industrial sheds in the Nessai Industrial Estate to the Margao Municipal Council for garbage handling.
The gram sabha has further resolved to ask the government to set up a police output in the village at Nessai in the wake of rising crimes.
At the gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Joycee Dias, gram sabha members demanded to know how come the government has allotted sheds in the Nessai industrial estate to the Margao Municipal Council for garbage handling when the request of the Village Panchayat for similar work did not find favour with the authorities.
The gram sabha demanded that the Panchayat immediately write letter to the Industrial Development Corporation conveying the protest and sentiments of the local populace and the demand for sheds for the Panchayat to treat the village waste.
Agitated members warned that they will not remain silent spectators if the IDC does not reverse the decision or allocates sheds for the Areal panchayat body for garbage handling.
Meanwhile, in view of recent murder of a young fish vendor from Dicarpale at Nessai near the irrigation canal, the gram sabha members demanded that the government set up an outpost of the Maina Curtorim police at Nessai to tackle the crimes. A member pointed out that a police outpost was functioning at the Nessai industrial estate before it was shut down by the police department.
The gram sabha members have demanded a SIT probe into sub-division of plots of a property where the Panchayat had in the past resolved to set up a sport complex and Academy. The members demanded to know how permission for the sub-division of plots was granted by the body in the past when the same body had resolved to acquire the land for a sport complex.
Gram sabha member Freddy Travasso further demanded a police inquiry into the claim made by the outgoing panchayat body that the Panchayat had spent Rs 1.70 lakh on cleaning of drains.
The gram sabha constituted a number of committees.
