Nearing completion of his second year in office, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has seemingly cemented his position if assertions by State BJP president Sadanand Tanavade that he will lead the ruling party in the 2022 State assembly elections is anything to go by.
Tanavade on Tuesday reiterated that the 2022 State assembly elections will be held under the leadership of Pramod Sawant.
He said, the party and the government are working in tandem and added that the ongoing agitations against the three linear projects will not affect the party’s prospects in the next general elections.
Tanavade said, the party’s electoral strength is intact and cited the recently held Zilla Panchayat elections where he claimed nearly 80 % of the rural electorate backed them.
“Politics done in the name of the three projects does not affect our voters,” Tanavade said, adding that urban voters will also support the party in the upcoming civic elections.
Sawant was an ‘outsider’ for the top post when he took over as chief minister following the death in office of the late Manohar Parrikar. His only experience was managing the Speaker’s post for a couple of years since 2017 but the party chose him over other senior politicians.
