Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday assured the Goa Legislative Assembly that the government will look into the issue of librarians working on a contractual basis in government-aided secondary schools across the State and explore possible solutions.
Responding during the Zero Hour to concerns raised by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, the Chief Minister said, “It is our government that has taken steps to regularise many contractual and temporary staff in various departments. We will also look into the matter of the librarians and try to find a way forward.”
Highlighting the plight of these librarians, Alemao said that around 130 youths have been serving on contract since 2016 under the “Scheme to sanction Librarians to Government & Government-Aided Secondary Schools.”
These appointments, he noted, are made for just 10 months each year “ from June to March “ on a modest consolidated salary of Rs 14,000 per month.
“These librarians face uncertainty year after year. Their contracts offer no job security and they remain completely dependent on school managements, with salary disbursements often delayed,” Alemao told the House.
He urged the government to take concrete steps to regularise their employment and ensure better service conditions for these essential education support staff.
The issue has been a long-standing concern among contractual librarians, many of whom continue to work without basic employment benefits or assurance of continuation in service.
