Convenor of Goencho Avaaz , Captain Viriato Fernandes on Sunday hit out at Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida for ignoring the Shantinagar issue and calling it unimportant at a time when several residents of the area feared that their houses would be demolished after the area was shown as parking space of Goa Airport on the ODP 2030 plans
" There are hundreds of houses in Shantinagar and some belong to poor people and no one knew that the entire Shantinagar area was declared as Parking lot of Goa Airport in ODP 2030 plans by MPDA and around 500 to 600 houses could have been demolished. When we realized that the area was shown as parking of Goa Airport , we immediately raised the issue but Vasco BJP MLA Carlos Almeida said that I was raising unimportant issues. If that issue was non important then why did he get the CM Pramod Sawant to Vasco three days after we raised the issue? Now three days ago MPDA Chairman Clafasio Dias has announced that the Shantinagar area has been removed as parking area of Goa Airport. This shows that our issue was genuine and it helped save a lot of houses. I appeal to the politicians and Government to take poor people into confidence instead of helping builders lobby," said Fernandes.
