Several Self Help Groups (SHGs) have taken up marigold farming in Sanguem taluka, given the growing demand among visitors for fresh flowers.
A recent addition to the list is the SHG led by Rivona Sarpanch Vaishali Gaonkar. Despite being first-time cultivators, the SHG has managed marigold cultivation with maximum yield from a small plot which was lying fallow for many years.
The fresh blooms on the plot have been attracting a large number of visitors to the site, who have been purchasing fresh flowers for religious or other purposes.
Social Welfare Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai visited the plantation earlier this week and complimented Vaishali Gaonkar and her group on their achievement.
Phaldessai said, “Earlier, flower vendors in Goa would procure flowers from Bangalore and other places. However, with the increasing production of marigold flowers in Goa, much of the supply is procured from local producers.”
Gaonkar thanked the local agriculture office for their support and assistance.
