In a bid to ensure the smooth and regulated functioning of the solid waste treatment plant at Saligao, the local panchayat has constituted a Supervisory Committee comprising three citizens.
Former comunidade president Desmond Da Costa, Evaristo Fernandes and Amit Coelho have been appointed as members of the committee. Similarly, the Pilerne panchayat has recommended the names of two local residents to be part of the panel.
The committee is expected to be headed by Saligao MLA Kedar Naik.
The move follows a series of complaints from residents over the unregulated movement of sewage trucks and reports of raw sewage being dumped on comunidade land near the waste treatment facility on Saligao hill.
The issue had triggered protests and prompted the panchayat to take up the matter with the comunidade.
Following several discussions between the panchayat, comunidade and local representatives, MLA Kedar Naik convened a joint meeting with officials of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and representatives of the Saligao and Pilerne panchayats.
At the meeting, it was decided to install a boom barrier near the treatment plant to prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering the site and to form a Supervisory Committee including local citizens to monitor plant operations.
Officials said the committee’s role will be to oversee the functioning of the waste treatment facility, ensure compliance with regulations and address concerns raised by residents.
