A large number of temporary Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) workers on Thursday afternoon met Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar and MMC Chairperson Girish Borkar seeking assurance to regularise their services.

Salkar said the workers had approached him amid fears that they could lose their jobs after so many years of work. “They are worried because someone told them that after October 31, their temporary status would be removed permanently. I have assured them that they are the most important workers for any municipality and that, no one will remove them from service.”

“These are the people who help keep the city clean and do odd jobs. They need to be fixed on priority because some people contract diseases like TB while working in the worst conditions while some have even expired.”

“Their lives are sometimes cut short while keeping our environment clean and they need security because they worry about their families, in case they contract diseases. I had raised their issue in the assembly, and we need to get their services regularised, especially because some people have been working so long that they have surpassed the age to get a government job,” said Salkar.

The MLA said Urban Development Minster Vishwajit Rane has agreed to his request and said that he would take all steps to get their services regularised.
