Three trawlers were seized during the ongoing fishing ban on Thursday morning, according to Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar who also said that his department will strictly implement the illegal fishing during the fishing ban period.
He said that special police teams and CCTV cameras will be installed at the main jetties for surveillance.
"Will fit CCTV cameras on jetties and the control of this CCTV will be in Fisheries Department offices,"said Halarnkar.
The boats have been seized and fines will be levied on them, said the Minister.
"We will have 3 squads consisting of three police inspectors and other police personnel", he said adding that his department is building 3 more vigilance teams in addition to a vessel with the dept.
By August these squads will be in place, he said, adding that if required assistance from the Coast Guard will be taken.
The Minister appealed to fishermen not to do fishing during the fishing ban as the ban is imposed so that there should be proper breeding of fish.
On another front, the Fisheries Minister also said that along with the officers of Food and Drug Administration the staff of the fisheries department will keep check on whether formalin is being laced for fish storage.
"Formalin is handled by the FDA. But fisheries staff will also do monitoring whether formalin is used for fish storage or not and if such an instance is found it will be reported to FDA", said the Minister.
